Prankster Lord Darcy informs Steed about his concerns for John Cleverly Carney, a suave womanizer who has hi-jacked his innocent pranks and turned them into the means of murder. The avengers discover that Carney has revived the eighteenth century Hellfire Club, a libertine organization advocating orgies and mayhem and infiltrate the club as members.
